May 25, 2011

Save Japan, Help Japan, Pray for Japan, Play for Japan

This is the first new mix I’ve put together since the big earthquake, and it was definately defined by
the ragged state of mind I’m in after 6 weeks of being shaken around. The constant state of readiness
we’ve been forced to be in thru daily aftershocks, each one not knowing if the shaking would fade out
in a few seconds or if it was going to turn out to be another huge one. Wondering if we’ll still be able
to call Tokyo home in six-months, if the air will be breathable and the water drinkable. Wondering
how in the world our country is ever going to get back to life. Just being in a constant state of readiness
to grab the keys and run for your life at the drop of a hat, 24 hours a day, every day, for the past couple
of months. With the earth seemingly made of jello, most of Tokyo is pretty mentally exhausted.
No question we gonna make it thru this, no doubt, but the enemy is so damn powerful and omnipresent…
we really could use a way to be able to take a break from the unspoken. I’m finding peace in shaking
the ground back, turning the tables with bass. Pushing back after being pushed, drowning out the
vibrations coming from underground with the subwoofer vibrating everything up here overground.
This mix includes some emo shit blended with a bunch of brand new dubstep and hip hop, chopped
and layered and fused together. I hope that you enjoy the listen, and that by listening you catch an
idea of what’s on our minds right now, me and my dawgs.

A word about donations, about charity. Obviously the destruction caused by the earthquake
and tsunami was so complete that without flat out cream donations we’d be in serious long term trouble.
But everybody knows there’s a limit to how much free money’s gonna come flowing this way.
In the longer term, for those who still have it in their hearts to continue supporting us
thru this, there is one thing you can give us that will benefit both of us and therefore be sustainable
thru the years to come:

Give us a chance to do what we do. Send some work our way. Give us a job, let us cook!

Instead of calling your next local event “Let’s Raise Some Cash and Help Save Japan Night”,
how about giving a DJ from Japan some shine and bring one of us over for a guest spot.
How about having a Japanese designer do the next poster you’re gonna have designed.
Having a Japanese photographer come over and shoot your next shoot.
The money you pay them for services rendered will be brought back and inserted directly
in to the Japanese economy locally, and will help to keep the culture you love alive over here.
We’re looking at a few long years of rebuilding, starting all the way down at the survival-level
basics like buildings and streets, electricity and bandwidth, and for the foreseeable future fully supporting
hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens who find themselves with no livelihood. This is where
all money must be flowing until the damage is undone.  The last thing people will have money left over for
is going to be the arts, music or otherwise. Rightly so, I’m sure.  But if your economy is strong enough to support
music and art and culture, please think about throwing a life-line this way. Your support could end up playing
a huge role in keeping a part of the culture around long enough to thrive on its own again.  Plus there are so many
great things that could come out of a deeper connection between our cultures–chipping away at the
long-standing cultural and linguistic barriers in a real way is something that’s long overdue.

Feel free to contact me with any ideas, and thanks for listening.
